5 Great Sea Fishing Destinations around Exmoor

Fishing around the coast of Devon & West Somerset is a very exciting prospect for keen fishing enthusiasts as well as the more leisurely line wetter. If you are visiting the Exmoor area and staying in the popular Exmoor holiday cottages, but fancy getting a day off from the countryside to have a crack at catching some tasty fish then we have five great destinations for you to check out.
You can expect to be fishing areas of deep sea, reef, rock, bottom, and drift fishing. Depending on the time of year you can look forward to hooking such species as summer Tope, Conger, Huss, Pollock, Winter Cod, and Whiting.

1.  Minehead:
There are a number of charter boats that are available to take you out from Minehead and all the skippers are full of the local knowledge to ensure you stand a chance of catching your very own Moby dick!

2.  Combe Martin:
Combe Martin offers a charter trip with the Osprey Fishing Trips Company. They operate along the Bristol Channel coastline, which includes Lundy Island. Deep sea trips can last anything from 4 to 12 hours and this depends on your requirements. Mackerel fishing trips usually last about 1½ hours or longer if necessary.

3.  Porlock Weir:
Local fishing aficionados will tell you that the best way to catch here is baits. Baits score for most species, while worm baits are suggested for the cod and plaice. This is an area where the odd turbot can be caught, but they won’t be any record-breakers! If you are fishing from the shore, fishing to the west of the harbour mouth is thought to get you the best results.

4.  Ilfracombe:
The pier at Ilfracombe is a popular and fruitful place to catch fish such as bass and mackerel and a good place to get top tips form the local fisherman too! Fishing charter boats can be hired from the Harbour and you can go as a group or join a group for a half day/ full days fishing.

5. Watchet:
Watchet’s target species here are Conger Eels, Cod (in winter), Whiting, Dogfish, Pout, Thornback Ray and the occasional Pollock, Flatfish or Bass. As you would expect, the fishing is similar to the other spots we feature so baits match this and are fish-baits, squid, ragworm and lugworm. It’s also not uncommon for people to float fish for mullet here- with good results.
